Obviously, it’s been a while since I wrote much. I’ve been doing things, just not writing about them. Plenty of baby steps toward several long term goals and discovery of new interests.
I recently finished a training cycle with a 20kg kettlebell and decided to take some time off for a bit of rest and recovery. While doing that, I decided to go back to dietary basics and am on what’s known as a Standard Ketogenic Diet (what some people think of as Atkins induction, but not quite the same). I feel really good and I’m dropping pretty steadily. Still working on deciding the next training cycle. My employer recently struck a deal with a local facility that contains a gym and I want to check it out because there’s been an urge to start incorporating some strength training into my overall program. I want to be ready to compete in a GS competition within the next year but have a long way to go.
Unfortunately, I won’t be able to participate in Run For Your Lives this weekend as I was nursing an injury (strained glute/hamstring) that was preventing me from being able to run at all. It’s a bummer but I decided it would be better to skip that one, recover, and get ready for the Warrior Dash on August 11, just over 7 weeks out.
On June 2, I went to the Indy 1500 Gun and Knife Show and purchased my first handgun from ZX Gun, who came from Goshen, IN. They were supremely helpful and had amazingly good prices on every item they sold. It’s a brand new Springfield Armory XD9 9mm semi-automatic pistol. I just got the basic package, it came with a cable lock, bore brush, and two 16 round magazines. I haven’t gotten a chance to take it out yet but that will all change this Saturday, when I plan to hit up Indy Trading Post for the first time and sling some lead downrange. I’m planning to spend a bunch of time getting familiar with the weapon. The plan is to take an NRA Basic Pistol course, then work up to the Gunsite offsite training in September. Money might be a limiting factor for that last one but it’s still something I’d like to do.
I’ve had an urge lately to get into more outdoor activities; trying to play disc golf with some regularity, want to go camping, and I’d really like to learn to hunt and fish. I plan to get an inexpensive .22 rifle to use at an Appleseed event as well as for small game. Pretty soon, I’m going to go kayaking and I’m trying to put together a fishing charter excursion out on Lake Michigan.
I know, it all sounds scattered. It is, at least a bit. The funny part? This is only about half of what I’m working on. At least it all makes sense in my head…mostly, anyway.
