Finding Balance

Every day, we all try to handle a lot of different things while trying to get them all done. A lot of that time is spent on one thing at the expense of the others. Personally, I really like doing what I can to keep a personal balance between all the things that are important in my world. It helps me maintain a feeling of fulfillment.

The word balance is defined as:

  • 1. a state of equilibrium or equipoise; equal distribution of weight, amount, etc.
  • 2. something used to produce equilibrium; counterpoise
  • 3. mental steadiness or emotional stability; habit of calm behavior, judgment, etc.
Every person has multiple aspects of life that are important to him or her. I’ve learned that making sure all of those get attention is important to living a good life and, for most of us, maintaining sanity. As we learned from The Shining, all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. Then you try to slaughter your family. It ain’t pretty.
So what should you work on often? Only you can answer that question. I’ve figured out what I need to do in order to keep myself happy.
  • Physical: Do something every day. If not a workout, go for a walk (having a dog pretty much makes it mandatory).
  • Creative: Work on photography or writing.
  • Social: Do something with friends at least once a week. More is always better.
  • Intellectual: Anything that cultivates the mind. I try to learn at least one new thing every day.
  • Professional: Above and beyond work, I try to acquire skills and knowledge that can help me in my career.

It really isn’t a long list but this is it. Some people might have a spiritual, family, or hobby component to add. It’s really pretty easy to figure out, just sit and think about what you feel like you’re lacking. Once you know what’s missing, do something to get more of it in your life. You’ll be glad you did.
